Mitigating the placebo response in clinical trials - insights from recent studies

Dr. Treister’s presentation will cover recent findings on the placebo effect and its relations with variability of pain ratings, two phenomena that are related to each other and both negatively affect analgesic clinical trials’ assay sensitivity. Driven by his own and others’ research, Dr. Treister will present a novel conceptual model according to which, subjects with specific characteristics are prone to respond to placebo and to present large variability of pain ratings. Evidence for the effectiveness of current methods to mitigate the placebo response will be presented, and future methods to increase analgesic clinical trials’ assay sensitivity will be discussed.
